Slam Bidding

Question

Hi Bernard, Which is the simplest way for east west to bid to the grand slam?

Bernard's Answer

You only want to be in a Grand Slam if you can count 13 tricks – here you are missing the SK, so the Grand is at best 50-50. The most normal auction would be: 1NT – 2C – 2H – at this point East has a heart fit and 31-33 points so slam is favourite – you can bid the other major as a general slam try – called the impossible bid. Here 3S would be a slam try in hearts because it cannot possibly be a natural bid (why did you use Stayman). Eventually East bids 4NT then 5NT as a Grand SLam try, but West without any extra kings (she will have shown the king of trumps in response to 4NT; would settle for 6H. 1NT-2C-2H-3S-4C – 4NT-5S-5NT-6H West shows 3 key-cards and then settles for 6H – I like the response to show a specific king, or the weakest bid being bidding 6 of the slam suit.
