Moral question on wrong card

This question was asked to: David Stevenson

Question

Hi David, please advise. Last night my partner and I were playing against a highly experienced pair in a club duplicate drive and one of the opponents played the wrong card. He was somewhat annoyed about the card being exposed and having to play it at the first opportunity which enabled me to make an extra trick. He said after that he would not have insisted on the card being played but i have done such a thing on numerous occasions in the past and had to play the card at the first opportunity, costing me a trick. If we had been playing a novice pair i might have allowed the card to be put back. The incident greatly distressed me, was i wrong?

David Stevenson's Answer

There are always players who try to gain advantages by bad manners and bullying tactics. It is very unfortunate but you just have to ignore them. Whether he lets opponents take a wrong card back or not is irrelevant to what you do. You have a perfect right to play to the rules and should not worry about criticism for doing so.
