Stretching when partner is overcalled

This question was asked to: Julian Pottage

Question

I have been asked to submit to you for your view on it: North opened 1H which was overcalled 2D by east. I (south) had: S: AK543 H:J95 D: J C: 9752 Is it always right to stretch? I didn’t think I could bid 3H as that would promise 4 card support (we dont play 5 card majors). Should I have bid 2Spades?

Julian Pottage's Answer

2S usually shows 10+ points. Having partial heart support and a shortage in the opposing suit is good, while a singleton jack could be useless. it is a close 3-way decision between 2H, double and 2S. As you say, playing 4-card majors, 3H is not an option. On balance I slightly favour doubling but neither 2S nor 2H are terrible bids.
