Forum Question 26 – Playing The Wrong Boards

Playing The Wrong Boards

This question was asked to: David Stevenson

Question

The other night at a small club I play at one round of two boards were played by the wrong pairs, there was a relay so unfortunately no one else noticed the error until after they were played. I assume that the board can be scored as played by the two pairs who actually played it? Also what score should they receive on the boards they did not play, but should have? In this instance there were two pairs who could not play the boards as the opponents had played them. My understanding is that the board needs to have a score allocated, if this is correct? what score should the two affected pairs receive?

Answer

So long as the pairs have not played the boards before then the results they got stand. Now we come to the question, who was at fault? Having a relay is no excuse, if it is a normal live event then N/S are required to pass boards including any relays and to make sure if it all possible that they have the correct boards. Any pair that was unable to play a board and it was their fault, for example if N/S at the offending table are unable to play the board they should have played, get average minus on such board or boards, which is 40% of a top or their session score if it is less than 40%. Any pair that was unable to play a board and it was not their fault, for example if an E/W not at the offending table are unable to play the board they should have played, get average plus on such board or boards, which is 60% of a top or their session score if it is greater than 60%.
