Hand Question 9
Bidding Query

East opens 1 Club. South overcalls 1 Diamond. What should West bid? Playing Negative Doubles.
Bernard's Answer
If you have the strength to make two bids, then you show your five card major first and then rebid the four-card major. However, I would feel with just 10 points and a possible misfit, you are just below the strength for making two bids, so I would start with a double, which in this auction specifically shows both majors - with just one major you bid that major. Here, partner can jump to 2S in response and you easily reach 4S. If you value the hand as 11 or more, then responding 1H and then rebidding 2S over a 2C rebid is fine. Here, both responses should work the same, since East should rebid 1S over the 1H bid. Or even if East rebids 1NT to show her strength you can now rebid 2S, since you have the strength for game (10 opposite 15-17).
