Bidding Question

Question

Partner opens 3H East passes. What do you bid? No system. If you bid 4C partner bids 4H. What now? Is it a good idea to use Ogust enquiry after a 3 opening?

Bernard's Answer

With NS Game, I expect my partner to be well behaved – he should have a robust suit that is likely to lose just one trick – I would expect hearts to be trumps and I think jumping to 6H is reasonable. You could bid Blackwood but will never know which ace/key-cards partner has (DA or HAK) so you will miss a grand slam when partner is AKQxxxx but perhaps if you jump to 6H and he holds that he might even bid higher! 3NT has to be a natural bid after a pre-empt – not sensible to play it as anything else.
